Free Community College could be a thing of the future thanks to Obama

If President Barack Obama has his way, then millions of young people could have a free alternative in their journey to obtaining a higher education.

On Thursday it was announced that President Obama is preparing to propose a plan that will allow an estimated nine million students a year the opportunity to go to community college tuition free. The plan is being called “America’s College Promise,” which according to the New York Post, is a plan directly modeled after a system that the state of Tennessee currently has in place to help kids go to community college for free. While all of the details of the plan are not known as of yet, some of the major details are as follows:

Students who attend school on either a half-time or full-time basis would be eligible to receive free tuition, and they would be required to maintain a grade point average of at least 2.5, while making steady progress towards completing a program and ultimately earning a degree. The plan is supposed to reward “responsible students.” The plan will also only involve schools that offer credit towards a four-year degree or occupational-training programs that award degrees in high-demand fields.

Now while that plan sounds like a dream scenario, many people are wondering just who exactly would be responsible for the bills if the students no longer have to pay for their own tuition. Well according to White House officials, the federal government, along with participating states, would foot the bill. But as of right now, it is unknown just how much the suggested plan would cost.

The President is expected to speak on the plan for the first time publicly tomorrow. He will also address the initiative in his State of the Union on January 20th. Many expect strong opposition from Republicans, but if the plan does come to fruition, then it could help millions achieve their ultimate goal of earning a degree with little to no debt.
