Authorities say the man then fled the scene and was later found going the wrong way on Interstate 75.

A 5-year-old girl has died after police in Florida say her father threw her off a bridge early Thursday.

The girl was pronounced dead at a St. Petersburg-area hospital after authorities pulled her out of the water. Police say an officer was driving hom shortly after midnight when the officer witnessed a Chrysler PT Cruiser drive past him in the southbound lanes on a bridge at 100 miles per hour, according to a Bay News 9 report.

As he attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver suddenly stopped on the bridge, got out, and tossed the child into the water, a 60-foot drop, according to police. Then he got back in the car and drove off, police said.

A St. Petersburg Police spokesperson said the officer’s “initial concern was for the child,” and after hearing the splash, he knew the child had hit the water, causing him to climb down to a platform underneath the bridge to try to find her. However, by that point, the baby was whisked away by the current.

The driver, 25-year-old John Nicholas Jonchuck, Jr., was stopped after driving the wrong way in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 shortly after, and authorities had to smash in a window to remove him from the car, police said.

The girl was later found in the water by a search team from Eckerd College an hour and 40 minutes later, and paramedics tried to revive her before she was sent to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police were interviewing the suspect overnight to figure out what caused him to allegedly through the child, and he was sent from Manatee County to the Pinellas County Jail after being charged with murder. He will also face charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding, as well as aggravated assault with a motor vehicle on a police officer.

Jonchuck has a history of domestic violence in recent years, according to the report.
