Andi Dorfman and Josh Murray got engaged in the most recent edition of The Bachelorette, and appeared on the live red carpet premiere for ABC’s new season of The Bachelor on Monday night to show viewers that they are still madly in love. The couple’s laughter and adorable bantering may have actually been a ruse, as Dorfman and Murray told People magazine a mere 72 hours later that they are separating.
During ABC’s red carpet extravaganza on Monday, Dorfman and Murray seemed to be happily together and ready to start planning their wedding. The couple got engaged earlier this year on the Bachelorette finale with a Neil Lane ring, which Dorfman was still wearing on the red carpet. Fans had no reason to doubt their relationship, since they visited Murray’s family on Christmas and hosted a New Year’s Eve party together in their mutual hometown of Atlanta. However, when host Chris Harrison asked Murray if they have made any progress on planning the wedding, he admitted that they hadn’t.
“We haven’t had time yet,” said Murray. “We’re looking forward to just settling down and just relaxing and having some fun with each other.”
On Thursday, the couple made a joint statement to People which claimed that their separation was a mutual decision.
“After several months of being engaged and working on our relationship, we have decided that it’s best for both of us to go our separate ways,” said Dorfman and Murray. “We are very sad that it has come to this point, but this is what’s best for both of us individually.”
The couple did not give any hints as to why they want to separate or when they started realizing that things weren’t working out. Many fans are suspicious that their actions on Monday’s Bachelor premiere was just ABC forcing them to feign happiness to keep viewers thinking that the contestants on one of their biggest franchises really can find love, a difficult task since only four couples in the series’ 29 series ended up actually getting married.
Former Bachelor Sean Lowe revealed in a recent blog post that Dorfman won’t get to keep her expensive Neil Lane ring if the couple does call off the engagement, as the company donated the ring to Murray for the proposal in exchange for advertising on the show and gets to take it back if the couple doesn’t stay together for at least two years.
