Apparently they don’t end in high school. On Wednesday night CBS aired their annual People’s Choice Awards, the ultimate Hollywood popularity contest.
This year the show took place at the Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles and was hosted by Anna Faris and Allison Janney, the two lead stars of the CBS sitcom Mom. The People’s Choice Awards website explains that all categories are decided solely by fans; there is a pre-vote to determine who is put on the ballot and then a final vote to determine the winner. The website claims it received over 70 million votes during the process on over 30 categories including Favorite Television Drama and Favorite Female Country Artist.
As Time’s review of the show reports, the nature of the voting and the design of the competition reveal the favoritism among America’s general voting public. Robert Downey Jr received his 4th consecutive award, as did the show Big Bang Theory. Allowing fans to decide also favors candidates who haven’t necessarily received critical praise. Adam Sandler won Favorite Comedic Movie Actor for his work starring in one of Time’s list of worst movies of 2014, Blended.
The public voting can also lead to multiple victories for some lucky and popular candidates. Jennifer Lawrence, for example, won both Favorite Movie Actress and Favorite Action Movie Actress. Neither of the awards were presented on the live show, perhaps as Lawrence did not make an appearance.
Other notable winners included 93-year-old Betty White as the Favorite TV Icon and Ben Affleck as the Favorite Humanitarian.
