Netflix announces release date for Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’

Another Netflix original series full of action is coming this spring: Marvel’s Daredevil. Netflix announced Wednesday that the show will premiere on April 10. Thirteen one-hour episodes will be available for viewing, or binge watching, at 12:01 a.m. PT in all areas where Netflix is available.

Daredevil follows the journey of Matt Murdock, a man who was blinded as a boy but has other heightened, extraordinary senses. By day, he is a lawyer fighting injustice in the courtroom. By night, he is a super hero in modern day “Hell’s Kitchen” or New York City. The series will give viewers a glimpse into his world and dive deep into Murdock’s back story.

Marvel and Netflix released a photo and poster along with their announcement. Matt Murdock is depicted pinning the character Piotr to the ground in the photo. The poster, still and in motion, illustrates the city being lit up by two large red Ds to represent Daredevil, the man without fear.

Charlie Cox stars as Matt Murdock or Daredevil. The series also includes Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk and Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson. The original series’ producers include Steven S. DeKnight (known for Buffy:The Vampire Slayer and more), Drew Goddard and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.

More violence and sex will most likely appear on Daredevil since producers are free of content restrictions. Executive producer Steven DeKnight said that they are able to “explore morally gray areas” when “rooting for the bad guy” or “questioning the good guy.” He explained that it can be difficult to do so on network TV. However, DeKnight said that viewers should not expect him to deliver the “Spartacus of Marvel.”

This is the first time Marvel, in association with ABC Studios, has had an original series on Netflix. And more than three additional projects are set to appear on Netflix. The first project is reportedly A.K.A. Jessica Jones starring Krysten Ritter, and it will begin production soon. The series will premiere in late 2015 or early 2016. TV shows based on Iron Fist, Luke Cage and a combined Defenders series are also being discussed.

The CEO of Netflix said that Luke Cage and A.K.A Jessica Jones should premiere on Netflix one year apart. The other projects are set to premiere one year apart as well.

Although this is Marvel’s first appearance on Netflix, they have made a stamp on network TV and in movies. Recently, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, which premiered in 2013, wrapped up on ABC. It was followed by Agent Carter, starring Hayley Atwell, which premiered Tuesday on ABC. Agent Carter follows Peggy Carter, who become a S.H.I.E.L.D agent during World War II after her boyfriend Steve Rogers (Captain America) is presumed to have died in a plane crash.

And later this year, the third film starring Marvel’s Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, will hit screens everywhere. This film will focus on Tony Stark’s attempt to revisit a dormant peacekeeping program. When his plans go awry, it is up to the Avengers to save the day from the villainous Ultron. Several Marvel characters other than Iron Man, Black Widow, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk are rumored to appear in the film (one being Peggy Carter).
