Spacesuits and spacecraft in the works for journey to mars

Recently, Elon Musk, the founder and chief executive/top technology officer of the private space travel company SpaceX, engaged in a Q&A session on Reddit that disclosed Musk’s future plans for building a spacecraft to bring individuals and materials to the planet Mars, and minor details about the attire the astronauts of Mars will be sporting.

However, the information Musk announced on Reddit is not brand-new; in June of last year Musk announced that he plans on sending humans to Mars by 2026.

Concerning the giant spacecraft Musk is working on: Musk plans on presenting this new, state-of-the-art spacecraft by the end of this year. Musk’s new creation has been being developed with careful attention to the flaws made in the Falcon and Dragon crafts, so that they will not be repeated, and so this new spaceship will be able to retain the positives of those creations.

Musk wrote: The Mars transport system will be a completely new architecture. Am hoping to present that towards the end of this year. Good thing we didn’t do it sooner, as we have learned a huge amount from Falcon and Dragon

And in another post concerning the spacecraft, he wrote: Default plan is to have a sea level and vacuum version of Raptor, much like Merlin. Since the booster and spaceship will both have multiple engines, we don’t have to have fundamentally different designs. This plan might change.

Musk plans on building a spaceship sturdy and large enough to carry a plentitude of materials to Mars; Musk wrote that craft must be able to carry  “100 metric tons of useful play- load to the surface of Mars. This obviously requires a very big spaceship and booster system.”

To go along with the massive project that is the spacecraft, Musk, and his team, are putting much effort into designing an extremely efficient and technologically-advanced spacesuit.

On Reddit when asked about the spacesuits used for Mars, Musk replied: “Our spacesuit design is finally coming together and will also be unveiled later this year. We are putting a lot of effort into design esthetics, not just utility. It needs to both look like a 21st century spacesuit and work well. Really difficult to achieve both.”

From the information gathered on Reddit, and the statements Musk has made about going to Mars in the past, we can conclude that Musk is very serious about this voyage, and that it may be coming sooner than we expect.
