Man walks into Baltimore Police station with gun, claims BGF gang commander ordered him to

An incident involving a man with a gun at a Baltimore city police station Tuesday ended peacefully with the arrest of the 29 year old man. According to Baltimore Police, the yet to be identified suspect walked into the Baltimore Police Departments Northeast station with a .22 caliber handgun.

The suspect reportedly was being routinely searched by officers when the hand gun and drugs were found on the suspect. Once the suspect was in custody he reportedly told officers that a Black Guerilla Family commander had ordered him to walk into a police station with a gun to test police security, according to Baltimore police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts.

“We’re really lucky for a person to walk into a police station fully armed and loaded with drugs on him that we didn’t end up in a terrible situation,” Batts said. “Just after noon, a call went out on Baltimore police radio channels alerting officers to be on the lookout for BGF gang members and to notify the Northeastern District if they come in contact with any.”

Baltimore Police has also started notifying police departments nationwide to be on alert for gang activity that may target police. Baltimore FBI field office spokeswoman Amy J. Thoreson said the FBI was being briefed about the threat and agents are offering any assistance if needed.

Police officers across the country have been on a heightened state of alert due to a recent spike in violence towards officers. This comes after months of protests against police brutality in the high-profile deaths of African-Americans Michael Brown and Eric Garner, both who died at the hands of police officers.

In mid-December, the Baltimore FBI office issued an alert to local police agencies stating the Black Guerrilla Family gang were reportedly targeting “white cops” in Maryland.

On December 20, 2014 a lone gunman ambushed two NYPD officers as they sat in their patrol car in a Bed-Stuy neighborhood, the shooting resulted in the deaths of the two police officers. The suspect, later identified as Ismaaiyl Abdulah Brinsley killed himself on a nearby subway platform.

Brinsleys attack was launched out of the Baltimore area, after shooting his ex-girlfriend, he then bragged on social media that his intent was to kill police officers in retaliation for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Gardner. Brinsley did have a criminal record but it is still unknown if he had any ties to the BGF.

A little over a week later two LAPD officers were ambushed in South Central Los Angeles, they reportedly took rifle fire while responding to a routine call, the two officers were not hit and were able to return fire causing the suspects to flee. After an hour long manhunt police took 18 year old Christopher Taylor into custody. The second suspect is still at large.

The Baltimore incident Tuesday comes less than 24 hours after two NYPD officers were shot in the Bronx, both officers are expected to survive their injuries.

The Black Guerilla Family is a prison and street level gang that originated out of the California prison system, they are recognized by Federal law enforcement as an organized crime group. Since its founding in 1966 the BGF has spread throughout the country’s penal system and is thought to have over 50,000 members, both incarcerated and on the street.
