Scarlett Johansson has been confirmed to be starring in Dreamworks’ live-action adaptation of the Ghost in the Shell manga.
The film will be an adaptation of the Japanese comic book of the same name written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. The book follows Motoko Kusanagi, a member of the fictional counter-cyberterrorism group Public Security Section 9. Motoko is a cyborg who specializes in fighting cyber crime.
Two animated films based on the series have previously been released, Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. Dreamworks’ principal partner Steven Spielberg is a fan of the original and has long wanted to get this project off the ground.
Previously, it was rumored that The Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie was in talks for the role. However, with the recent announcement of her casting in Warner Brother’s Suicide Squad movie, speculation turned to Johansson for the leading role.
Rupert Sanders, who made his directorial debut in 2012 with Snow White and the Huntsmen, is currently attached to direct the film. The project has yet to be greenlit, but Johansson committing to the film is expected speed up the process.
Johansson isn’t new to the action genre. She was the title character in Luc Besson’s Lucy, a film which earned $394 million worldwide, according to Variety. Johansson can next be seen as the character Black Widow in Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Avengers: Age of Ultron.
