Xbox One and Wii U showing signs of life

The PlayStation 4 has been the most successful gaming system on the market since its release in late 2013, but after a recent surge in sales by the Xbox One and Wii U, the gap in sales between the leader and its competitors might be closing, according to a recent report.

Thanks to the combination of the holiday season and some timely changes made by each company to get back into competition with Sony, the gap in sales between the PS4, Xbox One and Wii U began to close towards the end of last year. While Microsoft and Nintendo took different strategies to getting back into competition with Sony, they both made the necessary adjustments to have a successful end of the year.

For Microsoft, they lowered the price of the Xbox One during the holiday season, which allowed the company to regain the lead in sales over the PS4 in the United States. Experts believe that the original high price of the Xbox One turned consumers off and led them to purchasing the PS4. Ironically enough though, despite the success of the promotion to lower the price, Microsoft ended that promotion on Saturday, and the price has returned to its regular price of $400, the same price as the PS4.

As for the Wii U, Nintendo is forecasting a profit for the current fiscal year, which is set to end on March 31st. That is a win for the company considering that the Wii U has struggled since its initial release in 2012, and the system hasn’t been nearly as successful as the original Wii.

Part of the positive outlook and turnaround for the Wii U is due to the company releasing some games that catered to the core fan base of the gaming system. Some of the games include Mario, Zelda and Pokémon. Despite the recent success of the Wii U though, analysts don’t believe that the system will have a wide range of success outside of its core fan base.

With the holiday season now over, it will be interesting to see whether or not the gaming consoles will continue to make a push to catch up with Sony and the PS4, or if the PS4 will continue to lead and extend its lead to what it was before the holiday season.
