Longtime ESPN Anchor Stuart Scott passed away on Sunday morning after a long battle with cancer. Scott was 49 years old.
Stuart Scott got his start with ESPN back in 1993, when he debuted with the newly created ESPN 2. Over the course of his career, he became known for being one of the most recognizable and popular SportsCenter anchors on television. He created several catchphrases which have been, and will continue to be recited throughout the day in memory of him, including “boo-yah!” and “as cool as the other side of the pillow.” Scott is credited with bringing a different flare to ESPN and broadcasting during a time when it was desperately needed.
Besides being a SportsCenter anchor, Scott also interviewed some of the most influential figures in the world of sports, including Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan. Scott also hosted ESPN’s live coverage of the NBA Finals on several occasions, as well as a variety of NFL shows that ESPN has had over the years.
In 2007, Scott was diagnosed with cancer. Up until his death, he fought valiantly, and got the best of the cancer twice, only for it to reappear. Before he ultimately succumbed to the cancer, Scott left family, friends and fans with a message that signified what type of person he was.
During last year’s ESPYS awards, Scott accepted the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. Upon receiving the award, Scott delivered a speech that left everyone who watched teary eyed and emotional. While the whole speech was memorable, there was one part that stuck out the most:
“When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer,” said Scott. “You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.” Scott epitomized these words until his death on Sunday morning.
Athletes, entertainers and President Barack Obama remembered Scott throughout the day on Sunday. ESPN provided a video package dedicated to Scott, and other networks remembered him as well.
Scott leaves behind millions of fans, countless friends and family members, but most importantly, two young daughters; a 19-year old named Taelor and a 15-year old named Sydni.
