Montgomery's parents said on their Facebook change that they had done what they had promised and "brought Shane home."
Volunteer divers made a grim discovery in the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania on Saturday: missing college student Shane Montgomery.
Divers found his body at 12:09 p.m. in 36-degree water about three to four feet deep not far from the riverbank and the Manayunk pub where he had been enjoying himself the night before Thanksgiving, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
His mother and father, Karen and Kevin Montgomery, were reportedly despondent as they stood near the river while divers made the discovery. It was an outcome they feared after the divers found his keys on Dec. 21 in the river just 800 yards upriver from where they found his body.
Montgomery’s parents said on their Facebook change that they had done what they had promised and “brought Shane home.”
Family members had been holding a vigil at the edge of the water as the dive teams and police marine units continued their search for weeks, braving the freezing cold and drenching rain. Although the family was despondent, they were glad the search was finally over and they had closure.
Divers worked in a grid pattern during a 36-day search until one of the divers held up a hand to signal the discovery near the riverbank. They carefully brought up his body, and the police marine unit took custody of it as the parents positively identified his remains.
Montgomery had been only wearing a hooded sweatshirt that much despite the cold weather. Video showed that he was walking toward a footbridge that led to a parking lot near the edge of the water. He was later discovered behind the Manayunk Brew Pub, about a half-mile from Kildare’s, where he had been partying.
His disappearance caused an outpouring of support from the public as the search intensified and the FBI joined the Philadelphia police in investigating the incident.
Police, the pub, and the family offered a reward fund of $65,000 for information leading to his discovery.
