Two pieces of AirAsia flight 8501 found in ocean

As the search for bodies and wreckage of AirAsia Flight 8510 continues, two large pieces of an aircraft were discovered lying on the ocean floor. The pieces were picked up by sonar.

The discovery has not yet been confirmed. The National Search and Rescue Agency says that the pieces will be located and investigated by an unmanned remotely operated vehicle (ROV) which is now searching the area and will take pictures of the objects.

The two large pieces are lying close together and they are in water that is about 90-feet deep. One of the pieces is about 21-feet long, and the other is about 28 feet in length.

The weather in the area is bad and the recovery crews are having difficulty operating the ROV. Some operations may even have been temporarily stopped until the weather gets better. If problems with the ROV continue, divers are getting ready to investigate the pieces. Rough weather is expected to continue through Sunday.

Ships from four countries are currently seeking to locate the plane’s wreckage. Special efforts are also being made to locate the black boxes, which will reveal more information about what actually happened to Flight 8510. So far, they have not been located and no signals from them have been detected.

Efforts are being made now to investigate whether or not the pilot had followed the right weather report procedures. It is uncertain, Indonesian authorities are saying, as to whether or not the pilot had obtained a hard copy of the weather report before boarding the aircraft, which they are required to do.

As a result, Indonesian authorities have canceled any further flights between Surabaya and Singapore because they believe that the terms of the license has been violated. In addition, the aircraft was flying between the two cities on Sunday, but the airline was not authorized to do so.

So far, about 30 bodies have been recovered. 21 of them were found on Friday by U.S. ships. There have not been any survivors. Two of the bodies that had been recovered were still strapped in their seats.

Four of the recovered victims have been identified and given to their families. One of them was a flight attendant and one was a boy just 12 years old.

The aircraft had 162 people on board. Although it was believed to have encountered some rough weather, authorities are wondering what actually caused it to crash into the sea.

The area of the search has been expanded due to the time involved in the search. The agency behind Indonesia’s search and rescue operation reports that debris from the crash could have spread as far as 200 nautical miles by this time. Helicopters will also be searching for debris along the coast of Borneo.

One official, Marsma Supriyadi, who is the director of operations for the search and rescue agency, said that he believed that most of the bodies are still trapped in the plane’s wreckage – wherever that is. He also hopes that with all the ships and aircraft looking for it, that the wreckage should be found soon.

The recent three air disasters that involved Malaysian-operated aircraft have made people in the area wary of air travel. These flights include the missing aircraft – MH370, the plane shot down over Ukraine, and now Flight 8510.
