‘Price is Right’ contestants are way wrong about the cost of an iPhone 6

How much does an iPhone 6 cost? That was one of the questions on a special New Year’s incarnation of the game show “The Price is Right.” And according to an article from CNET, the four contestants on the show did not have the slightest clue.

Part of the issue, of course, was that the show was not talking about just the piece of hardware. Rather, the question wanted contestants to consider how much a 16GB iPhone 6 would cost with a full one-year calling plan, a 4GB data plan, and unlimited talking and texting.

Another part of the problem for contestants was probably that, nowadays, most phones are heavily subsidized by mobile carriers to make them affordable for customers. For instance, a 16GB iPhone 6 can usually be had for just $199 if you are willing to sign a two-year carrier contract with AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint.

In any case, the waters of smartphone pricing were muddied enough that the four contestants on “The Price is Right” failed to get anywhere near the right number. The first contestant was particularly off-base, guessing an out-of-this-world $7,500. Even Apple’s computers don’t cost that much!

The second contestant thought he had things figured out: he guessed $7,501. All he accomplished was getting further away from the true MSRP.

The other two contestants were closer: they estimated $850 and $930, respectively. The actual price was $1,969.

For his part, host Drew Carrey was a bit blown away at how high-balled and low-balled the guesses were. “I hope the marketing people at Apple are watching this,” he quipped. After all, if there are people out there who think that owning an iPhone for a year would force them to drop $7,500, that could be hampering the company’s sales figures.

On the other hand, if there are people out there who think that $7,500 might be reasonable for smartphone and a one-year service plan, then maybe Apple could be making more money from its flagship device.
