Huge mound of salt collapses wall, buries cars in Chicago

A fire department spokesman told a local TV station that the situation appeared to be a case of "too much salt and too little wall."

A huge mound of salt buried cars parked in an Acura dealership after overloading the wall of a warehouse in Chicago.

The building, a Morton’s Salt facility, had too much salt stacked up against one of its walls, causing the wall to collapse and spill outside onto the parking lot next door, according to a CNN report.

A fire department spokesman told a local TV station that the situation appeared to be a case of “too much salt and too little wall.”

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, wihch damaged about a dozen vehicles.

Another local TV station interviewed an owner of one of the vehicles that fell victim to the salt avalanche. Michael Cristofano had dropped the car off for an oil change, and said he at first found the situation funny, until he realized what could have happened if he or someone else had been in those cars.

City officials are working with Morton’s to inspect the structure and take necessary measures to keep it from collapsing any further. The Acura dealership next door, meanwhile, sent its salesman to help dig out the cars.

The general manager of the dealership told the TV station that it is a busy time of year and they had hoped to be spending their time selling cars rather than having to rescue them from a giant salt pile.

Fortunately for the drivers, salt doesn’t immediately cause damage to a car. Long-term, road salt can cause rust that can ruin a car’s paint job, but salt that is removed in short order isn’t a concern.
