Herrmann passes away in New York after battling brain cancer.

Gilmore Girls star Edward Herrmann died Wednesday in New York at the age of 71. According to TMZ, the actor had spent the last three weeks hospitalized in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York while battling brain cancer.

Herrmann’s manager Robbie Kass, confirmed the legendary actor’s death via an email to USA TODAY on Wednesday.

“Edward Herrmann, besides being an accomplished actor, he was also a true gentleman and a scholar, as well as being an incredibly kind and decent man,” wrote Kass. “He will be sorely missed.”

Herrmann was always praised for his willingness to take on a wide variety of acting opportunities. He was a spokesman for Dodge in the 1990’s, and lent his rich voice for several History Channel and PBS historical documentaries and programs in the early years of his career. He was best known for his series-long run as Richard Gilmore on Gilmore Girls, a young adult drama which was canceled in 2007 during it’s seventh season. The series was recently added to Netflix, and its resulting increase in popularity has lead to an influx of condolences from fans of the show.

Viewers may also recognize him for his appearances in several episodes of The Good Wife from 2010 to 2013 or his Emmy-nominated portrayals of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in various made-for-TV films in the 1970s. Herrmann finally won an Emmy Award in 1999 for his guest role as attorney Anderson Pearson on The Practice, and he had roles in award-winning films such as The Wolf of Wall Street and The Aviator. In his final role, he voiced Roosevelt again for Ken Burns’ PBS series The Roosevelts: An Intimate History earlier this year.

Herrmann, a Grosse Pointe, Mich. native and Bucknell University graduate, is survived by his wife, Star Hayner, and his two daughters.
