Police Commissioner William Evans accused protesters of being outsiders who wanted to "capitalize" on recent tragedies, and said it would be inappropriate to disrupt a family-centric event.
Boston’s mayor and police commissioner are asking activists to delay a planned “die-in” to protest police violence during the city’s “First Night” New Year’s Eve celebration.
Mayor Martin Walsh and Police Commissioner William Evans said that while they will respect protesters’ First Amendment rights, they urged the protesters to pick a different time and place to make their voices heard, according to an Associated Press report.
Evans said that it was the wrong event for this kind of demonstration, which is aimed at drawing attention to recent cases of police killing unarmed black individuals in the United States, particularly the shooting of Michael Brown in Missouri and the alleged choking death of Eric Garner in New York.
Evans said the festivities would attract many families with young children who shouldn’t “have to see [that behavior,” as they are innocent and don’t understand what’s happening. Walsh chimed in saying that although he understands the need for a dialogue, a demonstration such as this one would be inappropriate and wouldn’t be the best way to advance race relations, according to the AP.
Evans even accused protesters of being outsiders who wanted to “capitalize” on recent tragedies, and that they are not representative of the relationship the police have with Boston residents.
The demonstration is planned for Copley Square. If it does happen, Evans and Walsh said protesters need to be “respectful” of both the police and the attendees of First Night, which is in its 39th year.
Many thousands of partiers descend on downtown Boston during the event, which features fireworks, music, ice sculptures, and other family activities, similar to New Year’s events at many other cities in the United States and worldwide.
The protesters are calling their demonstration “First Night Against Police Violence, and it hopes to have at least 100 people on hand to participate in the “die-in,” which involves lying in the middle of the street as if dead to memorialize and call attention to the deaths of recent fatal incidents involving black victims and police.
