Sony, the victim of a barrage of hacks lately, suffered the temporary shutdown of their Playstation Network (PSN) service this Christmas. As a gesture of goodwill to consumers who couldn’t access their brand new multiplayer online games, the company has decided to extend both its Flash Sale and Holiday Sale, according to the Playstation Blog.
Gamers will have until 12:00pm Pacific Time on December 31 to take advantage of the Flash sale, and until 12:00m Pacific Time on January 6th to snag new releases.
Headlining the Flash sale are some of the most critically acclaimed experiences of the year, including Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, The Walking Dead, Destiny and Dragon Age: Inquisition. Lesser known gems such as Outlast and Lara Croft: The Temple of Osiris also stand out of the crowd.
As for the Holiday Sale, gamers should keep an eye out for Alien Isolation, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition, Nidhogg, Metro Redux, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag.
Sony also lists a number of television shows and movies on sale through the e-shop.
The PSN shutdown coincided with Microsoft’s Xbox Live troubles, putting both rivals at a disadvantage on a critical day of operation.
General Manager of Xbox product services Dave McCarthy told Polygon, “Microsoft takes the security of our customers’ data very seriously and employs a team of professionals to monitor and manage the security of our services. We recommend our members visit our dedicated Xbox Live Security page at http://xbox.com/security to learn how to protect their account.”
At the heart of the drama lies a conflict between two hacking groups: “Lizard Squad” and “The Finest Squad.” Lizard Squad, the team that has taken responsibility for the temporary shutdown of Microsoft and Sony’s online gaming networks, announced its intentions to be a “Grinch” prior to the holiday. Meanwhile, the Finest Squad fired back with a pledge to protect the PSN and Xbox Live.
Although it appears that The Lizard Squad followed through, recent events in the entertainment industry will surely push corporations to steel themselves against future attacks.
