Shark attacks surfer off central California coast, drags him under water

The man was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries to his thigh and right hip.

A surfer was dragged underwater by a young great white shark off the coast of central California this weekend — and lived to tell about it.

An 8- to 10-foot shark attacked 50-year-old Kevin Swanson of Morro Bay, Calif., while he was surfing at around 11 a.m. at Montana de Oro State Park, which is about 200 miles to the northwest of downtown Los Angeles, according to Fox News.

Swanson was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries to his thigh and right hip, and was listed in fair condition later that day, according to the hospital.

Andrew Walsh, who had been surfing with Swanson at the time, said the shark suddenly swam up underneath and grabbed his board out of nowhere. After Swanson surfaced, he yelled “Shark attack!” and began frantically heading for shore.

Swanson was able to fashioned a tourniquet using the leash cord on the surfboard to prevent any serious bleeding. He was fortunate enough to find that there were two doctors walking on the beach at the time, who were able to determine that his arteries were intact.

Authorities kept the beaches open, but will post signs for three days warning of the presence of sharks, and if another shark is spotted, they will stay up an additional three days.

It is not uncommon to spot sharks in this particular area, but actual shark attacks are extremely rare, authorities say.

Back in 2003, a woman was killed by a shark about 10 miles south of this most recent attack when she was swimming with seals.
