Miley Cyrus helps spread ‘free the nipple’ campaign

The “Free the Nipple” campaign has popped up in a few different arenas but for the most part gets attention in thanks to its celebrity supporters. The campaign is basically an equality movement for empowering women across the world and in all venues, which includes supporting the freedom of the female body.

In many pop culture cases where the topic is addressed, freeing the nipple refers to the policy that Instagram employs that showing nipples on the photo sharing social media site is strictly prohibited.

The app reserves the ability to shut down and remove anything they deem inappropriate for other users to see, and a variety of celebrities have had their Instagram accounts removed for violating the policy.

Many of course do not agree with the policy to begin with, citing that Instagram should not have the power to decide for everyone whether a nipple is considered inappropriate or not.

The concept gains traction when it is considered that Instagram will allow many photos to remain on the site that are overtly sexual in nature just as long as all private parts are covered, but they will not make exception for fine art or high fashion that is not sexualized in nature but happens to show parts of the female breast. Male nipples are of course, not considered an issue.

Past celebrities who have been affected by the nipple ban include Rihanna, who posted a photo of a magazine cover where her nipples were exposed and had the photo taken down. She left Instagram for some time after the incident but has subsequently returned.

Scout Willis, daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, recently made her own statement about the nipple issue after having her account removed for violating their guidelines and posting a photo of herself wearing a sheer shirt on the red carpet. To protest their decision she chose to walk around topless in New York and have a photographer alongside to document the process.

“I didn’t choose my public life, but it did give me a platform to help make body politics newsworthy,” she said on her involvement in the campaign.

Other supporters from the entertainment industry who have been involved include model Cara Delevingne, Chelsea Handler, Lena Dunham, and Liv Tyler.

Miley Cyrus is the latest of young starlets getting involved in the controversy, posting a black and white photo on her personal Instagram account over the weekend of her topless self laying on a bed. The photo stayed up longer than average for a celebrity but was ultimately removed by Instagram for violating their guidelines.

Captioned under the singers photo was support of freeing the nipple on Instagram, along with the assumption that the photo would soon be flagged and removed. She also later posted a photo of herself clothed and holding a rubber nipple in support of the cause.

Miley shared some of her thoughts on the matter in a recent interview with BBC’s Newsbeat.

“Guys get to show their titties on the beach, why can’t we,” she began. “I don’t understand the double standard of life. I feel like I’m one of the biggest feminists in the world, because I tell women to not be scared of anything.”
