As each year comes to a close many things are evaluated on how they did that year, across a variety of categories. One such category is actors, and which ones came out on top in the money making arena. This year Forbes announced that actress Jennifer Lawrence topped out their annual list for 2014, with films under her belt that have grossed numbers over $1.4 billion across box offices worldwide and are expected to keep climbing.
In 2013 Jennifer Lawrence came in at number ten on the Forbes list, but made the big jump to the number one spot with help from films such as X-Men: Days of Future Past and recently Mockingjay of the Hunger Games series. Mockingjay is still currently in theaters so her current grossing estimate is expected to rise throughout the holiday season before the new year begins.
After the recent Sony hacks on private company data it was revealed to the public that Jennifer Lawrence was paid less money than her male co-stars in American Hustle, and that gender gap fees in the entertainment industry are alive and well. Being the highest grosser of the bunch does not guarantee the highest paycheck out of the actors in a film.
Other actors that were recognized in the Forbes top five for 2014 include Scarlett Johansson, Mark Whalberg, Chris Pratt, and Chris Evans. Last year it was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the number one spot, with films grossing at $1.3 billion.
Behind Jennifer Lawrence this year, Chris Pratt came in second with $1.2 billion in global grossing with help from his films The Lego Movie and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Guardians of the Galaxy had a box office grossing total of $333 million, which made it the highest grossing film domestically in 2014.
Pratt was followed closely by Scarlett Johansson at $1.18 billion in part due to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Mark Whalberg came in at $1 billion in thanks to Transformers: Age of Extinction.
Lawrence did her part to spread the holiday cheer this year, stopping by a children’s hospital in hometown of Louisville Kentucky to spend some time with young patients on Christmas Eve.
The Academy Award winner also made time to cheer on locals at the Louisville Cardinals basketball game.
In the coming year, 24 year-old Oscar winner Lawrence will be finishing up the Hunger Games installment with the second part of Mockingjay. Post Hunger Games she will starring in David O. Russell directed Joy, a film based on a true story about a mother who turns toward entrepreneurialism.
Lawrence will be joined by actor Edgar Ramirez who is in final negotiations to be paying her husband (and later ex husband) in the film, as well as Robert De Niro who will play her father. Lawrence’s role is playing Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop which made her a successful fixture on the Home Shopping Network. Mangano now has many inventions on the network, and the film will tell her incredible journey of turning her inventions into well deserved fame and fortune.
