Rush Limbaugh is no stranger to controversy. And even during the holidays, he still managed to find a way into the headlines over something he said.
During Limbaugh’s radio show on Tuesday, he addressed the rumor of actor Idris Elba being a possible choice to be the next James Bond. For Limbaugh, Elba would be a poor choice for the role for one simple reason: Elba is Black and Bond has historically been White.
The whole idea of Elba being the first Black person to play James Bond is linked to a leaked email from Sony Pictures Entertainment in which an exec suggested that Elba should be the next Bond. But that idea did not sit well with Limbaugh.
In his diatribe, Limbaugh explained that the creator of the Bond series, Ian Fleming, created Bond as a White and Scottish man, not Black and British like Elba. He also said that it was probably racist to point out that the role should not be played by someone who is Black, or any race other than what the original race of the character was.
Limbaugh has made a career out of saying racially insensitive remarks. These latest comments regarding the race of a fictional movie character will only add to his reputation. The irony in this whole situation is that Elba has already addressed the possibility of being offered the role to play James Bond. In an interview from 2011 with National Public Radio, Elba said that he would accept the role if it was offered to him, and he also addressed the race issue in regards to being the first Black person to play Bond.
“I just don’t want to be the black James Bond,” said Elba during the interview with NPR. “Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.”
