During the conflict between the United States and North Korea over the movie “The Interview,” the Internet in North Korea went dark today. It was having trouble yesterday, but it was totally offline today.
The country of North Korea had been blamed for hacking into the computers of Sony Pictures, the makers of the new film. The film is a spoof about North Korea and its President, during which he is assassinated. They totally deny any involvement, and have threatened the United States if it takes any retaliatory steps.
Their threat comes a day after President Obama had said that the U.S. would retaliate in some way for what the hackers did to Sony Pictures. It is not known who or what happened to the Internet connections in North Korea. The fact that the country’s internet went totally dark could be the result of the U.S., another country, or individual hackers.
The Internet connections from the little country are very limited. In fact, there are only four connections in the whole country to the Internet, and all of them connect through China, except for possible satellite links. The United States has 152,000 connections.
Almost no citizens are connected to the Internet in North Korea. When it comes to IP addresses, there are only 1,024 in the whole nation. In comparison, the United States has 1.5 billion IP addresses. Also, none of the big computer manufacturers are allowed to sell computers to North Korea, so any personal computers they have had probably been purchased by a third party for them.
The hacking into Sony’s computers did a lot of damage to the company. Besides rendering their computers useless, a lot of data about each of the employees was taken. There was also a lot of information about Hollywood’ secrets. As a result of the hacking, Sony had to take all of its computers totally offline.
In order to help solve the identity of Sony’s hackers, the U.S. has asked China to help. China was asked to shut down the servers that North Korea links to, and to identify any hackers it knows of and send them back to North Korea. The United States wants China to let Pyongyang know beyond doubt that hacking into large U.S. corporations is not going to be tolerated. Although no official response has yet been given from China, the country indicated that there is not yet any real proof that North Korea was behind the attacks.
A notable problem while North Korea was in the dark is that South Korea said that its nuclear power plant had been hacked into. The data that was stolen, the country said, was of a non-critical nature. However, the President of the country realizes that it is a matter of national security, and they have asked the United States to investigate, but did not mention North Korea.
Because of its limited internet access, there may be problems if North Korea actually initiates a cyber-war with the United States. At a conference last year, South Korea’s Defense Minister at the time – Kim Kwan Jin – said that North Korea has 3,000 cyber experts. This can make it a real problem because there would only be very limited ways to hurt North Korea if a cyber-war is started.
North Korea has in the past conducted cyber-attacks that crippled government websites in both the United States and in South Korea. While North Korea is a nation that is financially limited, it has invested heavily in cyber warfare, which can make it a formidable enemy at a very cost-effective price.
