Madonna responded negatively when 11 of her songs from her upcoming album were leaked earlier this week. The leak of her album, which had no official release date or title, provoked Madonna to use social media to vent.
Madonna said in an Instagram post Wednesday, which has since been deleted, that leaking the songs is “artistic rape” and that she has been “violated as a human and an artist.” She said that the songs may or may not make it onto her upcoming 13th studio album. She claimed that half of them will not be on the album and the other half have evolved and changed.
The 56-year-old pop singer continued by calling the act one of “terrorism” and wondered why people would want to steal and destroy her “artistic process.” Madonna also asked in her Instagram post why listeners would not want her to produce her very best work. In a later Instagram caption on Dec. 17, she thanked her fans for their loyalty and for not listening to the tracks. Madonna added that the leaked tracks are “unfinished demos stolen long ago” and they are “not ready to be presented to the world.”
Material included in the leaked album artwork suggested that the LP could be titled Iconic. Other reports predicted that the album would be titled after the first song, Unapologetic Bitch, featuring Nicki Minaj. Other song titles leaked were Revolution, Messiah, Bitch I’m Madonna, which includes part of the 1983 hit Lucky Star, Illuminati, which name checks Beyonce and other big music names, Borrowed Time, Joan of Arc, Rebel Heart, and more. Billboard reports that the music includes elements of house and dubstep with songwriters and producers such as Avicii, Ryan Tedder, Diplo, and Natalia Kills.
Madonna has reportedly said to be “paranoid” after discovering that her phone and computer have been hacked for “over a decade.” She is nervous that an insider, possibly a member of team, is responsible for the leaking the album and attempting to cause damage to her brand. The hacker has accessed unreleased music and personal photos and sold them illegally. She says that she “hopes and prays” that the source of the leaks will be found soon and she is grateful for any leads.
This is not the first time Madonna has been hacked. An unfinished version of the song Give Me All Your Luvin leaked in 2012 months before its planned release. Madonna said that her “true fans” would not leak her songs. In 2003, fake files, which involved Madonna cursing instead of singing, were planted on peer-to-peer sharing sites to thwart piracy.
Other artists proved that leaks are inevitable. Even Taylor Swift’s new high-profile and protected album 1989 was leaked online. Swift’s fans chose to mock those who listened to the tracks instead of listening themselves. However, this project was set to release soon after the leak. There is little information known regarding Madonna’s album or time of its release. Madonna’s latest album MDNA, which was widely viewed as an artistic disappointment according to Time Magazine, came out in March 2012. This was four years after its predecessor.
