Amazon launches Prime Now in NYC

Amazon launched its newest service, Prime Now, in New York City on Thursday. The service allows Amazon Prime members in select cities to choose to receive their packages within one hour. Amazon Prime is a subscription service available for $99 a year.

The service launched in Manhattan and includes tens of thousands of essential products, such as paper towels, batteries and shampoo. Utilizing their growing number of fulfillment centers, Prime Now makes use of new technologies to speed up their shipping times. Deliveries will be made from 6 a.m. until midnight, costing $7.99 per item. Users can opt for two-hour delivery free of charge.

“There are times when you can’t make it to the store and other times when you simply don’t want to go. There are many reasons to skip the trip and now Prime members in Manhattan can get the items they need delivered in an hour or less,” said David Clark, Amazon’s senior vice president of worldwide operations.

“We’ve long felt that Amazon Prime is the best deal in the history of shopping and now it has gotten even better.”

Prime Now is available today in select areas of Manhattan, with plans to release in other cities throughout 2015. Amazon has also released a Prime Now app for IOS and Android which will inform users when the service becomes available in their area, TechCrunch reported.

After raising the price earlier this year, Amazon has been keen on adding new benefits for their members. Prime Now joins the list of new membership benefits such as music streaming, unlimited storage for photos, early access to the site’s “lightning deals” and more.
