Officials are still looking into what caused the fire, which spread to adjacent homes due to wind gusts.
Five people, including an infant, died after a fire in New Jersey spread to three homes in the wee hours of Sunday morning, according to officials.
The blaze, which took place in East Orange, claimed the lives of 20-year-old Breione Love and her 6-week-old daughter, Lanore, as well as 79-year-old Alice Horton, and Randy and Ronnie Horton. A WABC-New York report indicated it took officials hours to find and identify their bodies, and they are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
The station reported that the victim’s families rushed to the scene as word spread, breaking down in tears, with some even trying running into the burning home as fire crews stopped them. One man even had to be handcuffed.
Although fire officials don’t know yet what sparked the blaze, wind gusts allowed the flames to spread to homes on either side of where it started. Firefighters were able to save a woman on the third floor of a house who might be able to provide them with more information. The woman was able to crawl out of the window on the third floor and onto the roof.
Witnesses told the TV station that the neighborhood’s fire hydrants are old and it took firefighters 25 minutes to get a hydrant up and running.
The homes had bars on their windows, but there is no indication that was a factor in keeping the victims from escaping.
East Orange is a city in Essex County of New Jersey, with a population of about 65,000. It is located just northwest of Newark and is part of the New York City greater metropolitan area.
