Hunger Games: Mockingjay continues to dominate on a slow box office weekend

This weekend was one of the lowest earners of 2014.

Despite a relatively uneventful weekend at the box office, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 continued to dominate at the multiplexes, this weekend taking down some horrible bosses, animated superheroes, a happy-go-lucky group of penguins and Matthew McConaughey in space.

After three weekends, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 continues to be the number one movie at the box office. Hunger Games is a strong franchise, a fact that helped the film bring in $21.6 million over the weekend. However, another reason that the film continues to excel is due to the lackluster competition, making this one of the lowest earning weekends of 2014.

In second, those frisky Penguins of Madagascar brought in less than half of what Hunger Games made, bringing in $11.1 million. The film is doing well at the box office, currently bringing in $143 million but a rumored budget of $134 million, the kids movie needs to continue bringing in profits which may occur after Big Hero 6 leaves the top five.

In third place Horrible Bosses 2, the R-rated comedy, brought in a less than desirable $8.6 million. The movie was able to keep its top five status due to the fact that it is the only adult comedy currently in theaters.

Fourth place found the other animated offering, Big Hero 6, bringing in $8.1 million for the weekend frame. Big Hero 6 is doing much better than it’s children’s movie competition, Penguins of Madagascar due to it being more highly reviewed. The fact that it is a superhero film always helps.

Finally, in fifth place, the three-hour space saga, Interstellar, continues to being in big numbers by gaining $8 million from Friday to Sunday. The film had done well globally, making over $590 million from a meaty $165 million dollar budget.

Although there were not any new wide releases this weekend, audiences had the choice of two smaller scale releases to check out in the found-footage horror film, The Pyramid and the biographical film, WildThe Pyramid, which opened up with $1.35 million, stars Ashley Hinshaw, Denis O’Hare, and James Buckley as archaeologists who find a mysterious pyramid and decide to investigate it. Little do they know, the labyrinth like halls of the space are really a hunting ground of a sinister evil. Even though the film was not a huge financial success, it reportedly had a low budget. In addition to the low profits, the film also received dismal reviews.

Wild, on the other hand, made a decent amount of money considering the fact that it only played in very few locations. The film, which stars Reese Witherspoon as real-life hiker Cheryl Strayed, a woman who walked over one thousand miles in a long-form attempt to clear her head, took in $630,000 over the weekend from only 21 theaters. Quite the opposite of The Pyramid, Wild has received overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Finally, The Imitation Game, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as English computer science master Alan Turing, took in $402,000 from a very limited eight theaters. Check in next weekend when Christian Bale’s biblical tale Exodus: Gods and Kings and Chris Rock comedy Top Five come head to head.
