We have all seen the movies, read the stories and herd the conspiracy theories that one day mankind will be enslaved and destroyed by an artificial intelligence we created. However in today’s age of robotics and technology we have the potential to evaluate that idea in a serious arena. With unmanned drones flying over countries thousands of miles away with the potential to kill human beings at the push of a button, we see our technology provides a blue print for the possibilities we have most feared in regarding artificial intelligence.
Scientists continue to conduct an age old experiment that has been practiced since the beginning of the computer era. Computer analyzers sit face to face with a screen conducting a conversational experiment to decipher weather or not they are talking to a real human being, or artificial intelligence.
As reported by LiveScience, thirty judges sat down in London to decipher the experiment of chatting computer terminals. The experiment was conducted by the University of Reading, as a rendition of the Turing test that first appeared 65 years ago by a British mathematician Alan Turing. What is the goal? To assess whether or not a machine is capable of intelligent behavior that is so proper it is indistinguishable from a human being.
In the London competition, one of the computer conversational programs showed some potential above all other contestants. Eugene Goostman, disguised as a 13-year-old Ukrainian boy, was able to fool 33 percent of the judges who engaged in conversation with it. Some have even gone so far to revere the program as a historical achievement, finally beating the Turing test created over 65 years ago.
Although these test have had some promising results, it still seems unlikely artificial intelligence will be taking over the world anytime soon. With the advancement of our technology reaching new heights, so is our technology to combat those feared instances that have been depicted in storybooks and Hollywood films for decades.
