President Barack Obama visited Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Saturday to get a CT scan because of a sore throat, which was likely a results of acid reflux.

The president’s doctor said the CT scan was normal, and the president merely had soft tissue inflammation consistent with acid reflux, a common condition where acid from the stomach backs up into the throat, according to a CNN report.

There was no transfer of authority because Obama was never sedated at any point, although Vice President Joe Biden and senior White House officials were “kept up to speed,” according to the report.

The visit to the doctor was not on the White House schedule, causing reporters to scramble to keep up with the president’s motorcade as it headed to Walter Reed, which is located in nearby Bethesda, Md. He stayed at the hospital for 28 minutes.

Dr. Ronny L. Jackson, who is Obama’s personal physician, said in a statement that an ear, nose, and throat specialist from Fort Belvoir Medical Center conducted a fiber optic examination under Jackson’s supervision, which showed soft tissue swelling in the posterior throat, prompting further evaluation with a CT scan. The scan was conducted in the afternoon for the president’s convencience, and came out normal, Jackson added.

Acid reflux is a common condition that is easily treatable, often with simple changes in diet. Medications such as Nexium are often prescribed to treat it. The CT scan was likely done out of an “abundance of caution,” according to CNN’s chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta.

Smoking can bring on acid reflux, and Obama used to be a smoker, but White House press secretary Josh Earnest said that the president had quit with the assistance of a nicotine gum.

Overall, Jackson said the president’s health was excellent, with a checkup scheduled for June.
