Los Angeles police gunned down a man armed with a knife near the Hollywood Walk of Fame Friday evening.

Witnesses called police to report a man with a knife at about 7 p.m. at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue. He was armed with combination pocket knife, according to NBC Los Angeles.

Police fired on the man when he approached them with the knife, according to Meghan Aguilar, a spokesperson for the LAPD. The man died at around 9:30 p.m. after being taken to the hospital. Police recovered a combination knife at the scene similar to a Swiss Army Knife, which often features other tools like a can opener or pair of miniature scissors.

After police confronted the man, witnesses reported hearing the sound of “firecrackers,” which they later realized was gunfire, prompting people in the area to scatter, according to the report. One witness said it was a series of four or five pops, and people “started panicking.”

The report indicated that one woman had run into a local McDonald’s saying that the police had gunned down his friend, and said the man often waved the knife to frighten tourists.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame comprises of 2,500 five-pointed stars made of terrazzo and brass that are embedded in the sidewalks along 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and another three blocks of Vine Street in Hollywood.
