The Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 57th Grammy Awards on social media Friday morning, and while next year’s ceremony will feature several repeat artists, it may be dominated by a first-time nominee. British soul-pop artist Sam Smith leads the competition alongside R&B icon Beyoncé with an impressive five nominations each.
Smith, whose nominations include the coveted Best New Artist award, is up for Best Pop Vocal Album for “In the Lonely Hour” and Record of the Year for his song “Stay with Me.” He will also be making his first appearance on the Grammy stage.
Beyoncé, meanwhile, had been tied with country music icon Dolly Parton for 46 nominations each. Her new total of 51 career nominations makes her the most-nominated artist in Grammy history, putting her ahead of previous record-holder David Foster. Her self-titled album, which she released last December without promoting it at all ahead of time, was one of this year’s biggest-selling records and is unsurprisingly the frontrunner for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
Rivers received a posthumous Grammy nomination three months after her death at the age of 81, earning a nod for “Diary of a Mad Diva” in the Best Spoken Word album category. The comedian previously won a Grammy in 1984 for Best Comedy Album.
Taylor Swift’s album “1989” was noticeably snubbed, as it didn’t earn any nominations even despite selling more than 2 million copies and its title song, “Shake it Off,” earning three nods.
The Recording Academy neglected to announce the nominees for the Album of the Year category, choosing instead to announce the nominees during their “A Very Grammy Christmas” concert airing Friday evening on CBS. The new televised special will feature performances by Tim McGraw, Maroon 5, Pharrell, and Ariana Grande.
Winners for the 57th Grammy Awards will be announced during the Feb. 8, 2015 ceremony in Los Angeles.
