A 15-year-old boy died last night in Kansas City when a person driving an SUV intentionally ran him over, severing his legs and killing him, according to police. Early indications from the media suggest it may have been a hate crime, according to reports.

The boy was struck by the SUV during the evening when he was getting into a car outside of the Somali Center in the city. The SUV struck another person, but that person does not have life-threatening injuries.

The SUV driver tried to flee the scene, police said, but it was disabled by the crash. The man, who was in his 30s, tried to flee on foot but police arrested him, according to the report, which stated he was also armed with a machete and other weapons.

The teenager was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital after being struck, but died after losing too much blood due to his legs being severed.

A local TV station reported that Police Sergeant Bill Mahoney said that it was “clear that this was not an accidental crash.”

The boy was sitting outside the Somali Center at around 5:30 p.m. when he was struck getting into a car parked along Admiral Boulevard.

People involved with the Somali Center say the man who was arrested had been threatening Muslims on Facebook for a while now, and had pointed a gun at them and threatened to kill them because of their Muslim faith, according to a Fox4KC.com report.

The victim is the son of the leader of the Somali Center, according to the report. He has not been identified.
