The police officer on the case said he did not expect foul play, but did not elaborate on how the accident happened.
Police are puzzled by the discovery of a college student’s body in the food elevator at a bar and grill in Wisconsin, but they believe it to be a freak accident.
Police responded to a 911 call at around 8 p.m. on Monday to the WingDam Saloon and Grill located in Fountain City, a small town that straddles the banks of the Mississippi river that separates Wisconsin from Minnesota. They found the body of 21-year-old Brooke Baures, who was a senior and gymnast at Winona State University, in the food elevator in the kitchen, according to Fox News.
She worked at the restaurant, authorities said.
The town has only 859 residents and one police officer, Jason Mork, who said her body was found in what is known as the “dumbwaiter,” which has an opening that is only 3 feet by 3 feet. Employees are not supposed to enter the dumbwaiter under any circumstances.
Although the officer indicated that he doubed Baures was trying to use the elevator, he doesn’t believe she was murdered.
The discovery closed the restaurant on Tuesday night. Winona State University posted on its Twitter account that the “WSU community mourns the loss of student and Warrior gymnast Brooke Baures. Brooke’s family, friends & teammates are in our thoughts.”
Food elevator accidents are very uncommon, according to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, with only two fatal incidents reported in the United States between 2003 and 2013.
The university’s athletic director described Baures as a “selfless teammate’ who “was very well-liked.” She was also an important part of the gymnastics team and the athletic department as a whole, he said.
