The Eagle is landing. On Monday Netflix announced the third season of its acclaimed series House of Cards will debut on February 27, 2015.
The news came via twitter. First, the streaming subscription network posted “BREAKING NEWS: President Underwood and the First Lady will be making an announcement today at 11 AM EST. Please stand by…” At 11, another tweet with the caption “A special message from the White House” appeared. A short video appeared, showing Kevin Spacey’s President Underwood and Robin Wright’s First Lady boarding an airplane, displayed the date 02 27 15 under an upside-down American flag.
Season 3 will likely become available all at once, as was the case with the previous 2 seasons. The tradition of debuting in February had appeared in jeopardy this year, as production ended up being delayed due to a governmental dispute on tax credit laws. According to Deadline, Seasons 1 and 2 had been shot in Maryland, giving the production over $26 million in tax credits combined. However, in early 2014 Maryland’s tax cap was $7.5 million, too low for the show’s producers Media Rights Capital. The producers even wrote letters to various legislators to argue their case for the tax cuts.
Fortunately for diehard fans, the series was able to begin production in Maryland in June. Based on an English television drama of the same name, House of Cards was adapted by writer Beau Williamson. The first original drama produced by Netflix, it has been a critical and commercial success, with the third season being greenlit even before the second season aired.
