Xbox One wins latest round of console wars against PS4

The Xbox One account for 53 percent of all console sales on Black Friday, while Sony's PlayStation 4 came in second with 31 percent.

Microsoft has been working hard to boost sales of its Xbox One console for the holiday season. A few weeks ago, the company announced a $70 discount for the Xbox One, giving customers good savings on the $400 console. The discount was not available everywhere, but its presence at major holiday retailers like Target and Walmart was enough to push the Xbox One to the top of the console market for Black Friday 2014.

Indeed, according to a report from WinBeta.org, the Xbox One account for 53 percent of all console sales on Black Friday. Sony’s PlayStation 4, of course, came in second with 31 percent.

Nintendo, meanwhile, could not even grab third place with its lagging Wii U system. On the contrary, the Wii U finished in fourth, with six percent of Black Friday sales, while Microsoft grabbed a second victory by staking an additional nine percent of the market with the now nine-year-old Xbox 360. Sony’s older console, the PlayStation 3, showed much less staying power and only accounted for one percent of all consoles sold.

The significance of victory cannot be overstated for the Xbox One, which has been outsold by the PlayStation 4 during most months since the consoles arrived on the market last fall. Microsoft pushed for big sales on the biggest shopping day of the year, offering title and hardware bundles in addition to the discount price point.

The big Black Friday deals had the desired effect for Microsoft: the Xbox One will now be one of the most popular gifts of the holiday season. Furthermore, the strong sales will likely drive profits for games, Xbox Live subscriptions, and other supplementary products throughout 2015. In other words, Microsoft just put itself in a great position for the next year-plus of gaming industry competition.
