More storms with heavy snow and rain are expected this week.
California storms snarled traffic and delayed flights across the state this holiday weekend, with rain and wind ruining plans for many Thanksgiving travelers.
Weekend storms hit Northern California hard, bringing a foot of snow to Sierra Nevada ski resorts, including Donner Pass, and more storms brought even more snow to the northern mountains this morning, according to a CBS News report.
Meanwhile, in Southern California, heavy rains in the Malibu area caused mud and debris to block the Pacific Coast Highway, stranding motorists and forcing the highway’s closure into today.
Other parts of Southern California fared better, with light rain in downtown Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. About a half inch fell in inland areas such as Rowland Heights, however, causing flooded roadways.
The big snowfalls in the northern part of the state were a boon to skiers, who enjoyed 9 inches of fresh powder that had been falling since Friday evening on Boreal Mountain Resort near Lake Tahoe.
There was also some rain recorded in the region, with Sonoma getting more than 3 inches.
Fog also proved to be a factor over the holiday weekend. Officials at San Francisco International Airport had to scale back its flights from about 60 to 25 per hour due to heavy fog, causing delays of two hours or more for travelers.
In reality, precipitation is down from expected levels this year, with the Sierras getting only 76 percent of the normal level of precipitation at this point of what meteorologists call the “water year” starting on Oct. 1. However, the storms so far have improved conditions over last year, when it took until February to reach the amount of precipitation the area received over the weekend.
It may not be over yet for the region, with another storm system set to move into the state later this week to bring heavy rain and snow.
