Chromecast is $15 cheaper than Roku, but personal preferences should factor in.
Google Chromecast and the Roku Streaming Stick, the flash-drive-looking devices that are plugged into a TV’s HDMI port, allow users to stream content from their smartphone or tablets on their TVs. The two dongles are very similar, with Roku available for $50 and Chromecast for $35, but differ on some key features.
The Tech Hive compared the devices along five categories, including basic and advanced remote control, supported apps, power usage and startup time. Even after testing, the two were locked even, as each prevailed in two categories and tied in one.
In terms of app variety, Roku slightly edged Chromecast because of its “greater pay-per-view selection” and a wider array of apps. Although suggesting “this matchup is still evoving,” the Tech Hive points out that Roku’s Channel Store is easy to navigate from the device’s interface, while Chromecast calls for an extra step.
Roku also beats Chromecast because it comes with a physical remote control, which the Chromecast lacks. The Tech Hive calls this a “huge advantage” because it’s convenient to pause, play or fast-forward without having to go into your smartphone and launch an app. However, the advanced remote control function of Chromecast outperforms Roku, as it proves easier to log in and search for content.
The streaming sticks tied in the power consumptions category, with Roku using 2.4 watts and Chromecast using 2.5 watts to stream a 1080p HD broadcast.
The start-up time saw Chromecast superior with 24 seconds compared to the Roku’s minute and a half. “The Roku tries to entertain you with an animated logo while you’re watiting, but that gets old quickly,” The Tech Hive notes.
The website suggests the consumer should consider their personal preferences, especially as it pertains to a physical remote and app choices. “If your tastes are more esoteric, if you want pay-per-view choices, or if you prefer a physical remote control, Roku makes the superior device. Otherwise, save $15 and go with the Chromecast.”
