Sony Pictures is investigating the possibility that the attackers could have been working on the behalf of the North Korean government.
Did North Korea just declare war against Sony Pictures? That could be the case, according to a recent report from the entertainment website Re/code. Apparently, Sony Pictures suffered a fairly devastating cyberattack earlier this week. Employees were locked out of their computer system, and had to “resort to using pen and paper to do their jobs.” The attack also threatened leaks of sensitive Sony Pictures data unless the studio met a few unspecified demands.
The hackers styled themselves as the “Guardians of Peace,” or #GOP. However, Sony Pictures is investigating the possibility that the attackers could have been working on the behalf of the North Korean government.
Why would North Korea want to cause trouble for a movie studio? Actually, the answer to that question is quite evident. Sony is currently preparing to release a film called The Interview, a comedy about a pair of American journalists recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korea leader, Kim Jong Un.
The film, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, drew furious responses from North Korea a few months ago. The country actually threatened “merciless retaliation” against the United States as a whole unless Sony Pictures pulled plans to release the movie.
The Interview is still scheduled for release on Christmas Day, so this cyberattack could be one last-ditch effort from North Korea to prevent it from seeing the light of day. If Sony is truly concerned that North Korea could behind the hack, it is highly likely that one of the “unspecified conditions” of the hack was the cancellation of The Interview‘s release.
Sony has been careful not to point the finger at North Korea, and is merely investigating the incident. The movie studio has also been coy about exactly what type of data was stolen from their servers, in addition to being secretive about the threats received as part of the hack. So far, though, it looks like Sony has no plans to back down from releasing The Interview. If that is the case, though, the company had better get better cyber-security, because this probably will not be the last attack.
