Facebook, Instagram and Lyft are among the most recommended apps.
Thousands of apps are available to download for iPhones, Android phones and even Windows Phones. But which ones are essential must-haves for the millions of people who are likely getting their hands on new smartphones this holiday season? (and which are okay to overlook?)
According to USA Today, Google Maps is a must for navigation and Pandora for streaming music. SoundCloud, Tunein Radio and Stitcher are all great for podcasts, while Lyft is a great app to catch a ride on-demand (Uber is another popular app for transportation).
The more obscure but useful apps include Tiny Scan for document scanning and Snapseed for photo editing. Facebook and Instagram must-have social media applications.
People surveyed by USA Today also suggested Spofity for on-demand music, VSCO Cam for photo editing, Pinterest, Waze (peer-to-peer navigation), and Snapchat and Whatsapp for instant messaging and texting. WatchESPN was a must-have for a sports fan.
Laptop Mag compiled its list of top apps and it included a household list of names such as Netflix and Spotify. Productivity apps such as Microsoft Office and Evernote were included, as well as MyFitnessPal as the best fitness app. Dropbox was chosen as the best “cloud and sync app.” The best iOS-exclusive app was Dark Sky, while the best Android-exclusive app was FoxFi.
Dating apps comprise their own category, and Laptop Mag suggests that Match.com is at the top of the heap. “For those serious about finding someone to date, not just hook up with, you’re best going with a paid service,” according to the site.
