Republican House staffer says first daughters' dressed for "a spot at a bar" at the presidential Thanksgiving Day address.
Republican House staffer Elizabeth Lauten ridiculed the first daughters’ outfits and attitudes at the annual presidential Thanksgiving Day address and instructed them to “have a little class” via Facebook.
Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Rep. Stephen Fincher, R-Tenn., slammed Sasha and Malia Obama saying that they should dress for respect and not for “a spot at a bar.”
Malia was dressed in a sweater, tights, a plaid mini skirt and ankle boots. Sasha appeared in a short dress paired with a cardigan, mid-calf socks and boots.
Malia and Sasha Obama appeared by their father’s side Thursday as he delivered the nationally televised speech with scowls and slight eye rolls. The Root reported that several commentators were amused by the teenagers’ lack of enthusiasm and joked that even the President is an embarrassing dad.
However, Lauten took the girls’ behavior seriously. She advised the girls to not “make faces during televised, public events” and stressed the importance of respect.
Lauten also commented on the president’s and the first lady’s behavior. “Then again your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the ‘good role model’ department,” Lauten said.
Lauten has since deleted her rant and issued an apology, according to the New York Daily News.
“I reacted to an article and quickly judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager. After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents and re-reading my words online, I can see more clearly how hurtful my words were. Please know that these judgmental feelings truly have no [place] in my heart,” she wrote.
Later, Elizabeth Lauten deleted this post as well and made her profile private.
