‘You will s–t yourself’: James Cameron teases details on ‘Avatar’ sequels

Cameron reveals details on the highly-anticipated 'Avatar' sequels.

James Cameron’s Avatar is considered to be the most successful film in history, and the director told Empire magazine in a recent interview that the next films in the franchise may be even better. Cameron is currently working on the scripts for three sequels, and while he won’t reveal plot details, he assures that they will all be “bitchin’.”

Avatar cost an incredibly high $237 million to make, but the budget was justified after the film made a record $2.78 billion in worldwide ticket sales. According to an understanding signed by Cameron, producer Jon Landau, Lightstorm Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, and the Government, the three movies will reportedly be filmed in New Zealand and will cost over $500 million to make. Cameron is confident that the sequels will all be good enough to warrant their steep expenses.

“I can tell you one thing about them,” said Cameron. “They’re gonna be bitchin’. You will s**t yourself with your mouth wide open.”

Rise of the Planet of the Apes writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, The Black Dahlia writer Josh Friedman and Savages writer Shane Salerno will all split writing duties on the three sequels. According to IMDb, Jaffa, Friedman and Silver have been assigned to write the second and third sequels, and Salerno will write the fourth film.

“We met for seven months and we white-boarded out every scene in every film together,” Cameron told Empire. “I didn’t assign each writer which film they were going to work on until the last day. I knew if I assigned them their scripts ahead of time, they’d tune out every time we were talking about the other movie.”

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver will reprise their roles in the first sequel, which will reportedly follow directly after its predecessor. Avatar 2 is expected to release in US theatres on Christmas Day in 2016.
