The pair of Oscar winners will also co-produce the series, which is as yet without a network.
Television is apparently the place to be. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman have signed on to co-executive produce and star in a limited television series.
The series will be titled Big Little Lies, based on the novel of the same name by Lianne Moriarty, who will also produce. The story centers around three mothers whose lives become complicated when a murder mystery occurs at an elementary school fundraiser. The role of the third mother has yet to be cast.
Prolific television presence David E. Kelley has signed on to write and produce. Known for legal dramas such as LA Law and Boston Legal, he most recently served as the showrunner for The Crazy Ones starring the late Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar. The series is not yet attached to a network but is expected to be offered to high-end channels such as HBO or streaming networks such as Netflix.
Kidman, 47, and Witherspoon, 38, have both mainly focused on film in the past. As the Daily Mail points out, Kidman started her career on an Australian television show but has not returned to the small screen since her 2012 TV movie Hemingway and Gelhorn. Witherspoon’s best-known television appearance was as Rachel’s sister on 2 episodes of Friends.
However, many Hollywood stars are flocking to television to find meaty roles with short, accessible schedules. Other Oscar winners such as Matthew McConaughey, Billy Bob Thornton, and Halle Berry have all accepted television roles to positive critical reviews.
No timeline for Big Little Lies has yet been announced.
