HBO confirms that Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly will all play major roles in Emmy-nominated series' second season.
When Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell were first confirmed as the stars of the next season of HBO’s Emmy-nominated series True Detective last month, countless actresses were instantly rumored to be in contention for the critically acclaimed show’s female lead. However, the network officially confirmed Monday that Rachel McAdams has in fact been cast as Ani Bezzerides, the “Venture County Sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with the system she serves.”
Elisabeth Moss, Rosario Dawson, Jessica Chastain, Jessica Biel and Keira Knightley were all at one point linked to the Bezzerides role after HBO announced the second series of True Detective, but according to Variety, the network always favored McAdams for the role. The Mean Girls star was unable to initially commit to the project due to a potential scheduling conflict with her upcoming film Spotlight, but McAdams and HBO have reportedly found a compromise that will allow her to take on both projects. She is now fully on board to play the sheriff who will presumably serve alongside Farrell’s Ray Velcoro, the compromised detective “whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.”
After announcing McAdams’ casting, HBO revealed that Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly will also join the cast of True Detective season two. Kitsch will portray Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol who is running from a difficult past. Reilly will play Jordon, a former D-list actress who is a full partner in the enterprises and ambitions of her husband Frank Semyon, who will be portrayed by Vaughn.
Fast & Furious director Justin Lin will direct the first two episodes of the new season. Production has reportedly already started, and HBO is aiming for the show to premiere next summer.
