'Roar' singer selected as headline act for Pepsi Halftime Show, and will perform in front of over 100 million people.
Bruno Mars raised the bar with a show-stopping performance at the Super Bowl halftime show earlier this year, and the NFL announced late Sunday that pop star Katy Perry will be the next to take on one of television’s biggest stages. A favorite among teenage music fans, Perry will continue the NFL’s apparent attempts to cater to a younger audience.
The Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and the Who have all headlined the Super Bowl halftime show over the past decade, but the NFL has been selecting younger artists such as Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and the Black Eyed Peas in recent years to keep their younger audiences interested. Perry, who has had nine No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and whose multiplatinum album “Teenage Dream” matched the record Michael Jackson’s “Bad” set for most songs from a single album to hit No. 1, will continue that trend. Her halftime show will air on NBC on Feb. 1 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona, and likely include recent No. 1 hits “Roar” and “Dark Horse.”
The NFL reportedly struggled to find someone to headline the upcoming Super Bowl due to a proposal that the selected performer provide them with financial compensation and/or a percentage of post-Super Bowl tour revenue for the opportunity to perform in front of over 100 million people. Perry stated on ESPN’s College Gameday last week that she’s “not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl,” and while she has not yet revealed whether she gave in to the NFL’s proposal or if they reached a different compromise, she posted on Twitter that she’s very excited for the opportunity the NFL is giving her.
“Can’t wait for February 1st,” tweeted Perry. “3 AMA’S & SUPER BOWL?! Not long ago I was playing guitar on the streets of Santa Barbara for maybe 20 bucks a day & an avocado. Wow, life!”
