Florida State defeats Boston College, remains atop AP rankings

Florida State was able to defeat Boston College and stay undefeated after a tumultuous week in Tallahassee.

On a rainy day in northern Tallahassee, Florida State went about business as usual taking on Boston College in an effort to stay undefeated on the season. Having won a school record 26 consecutive games, the Seminoles sought to avoid their usual slow start against a Boston College team that often gets overlooked in a competitive ACC conference.

Jameis Winston completed 22 of 32 passes for 281 yard with one touchdown and one interception. Eagles’ quarterback Tyler Murphy had a quiet passing day and let the running game take over, completing 6 of 10 passes for 73 yards and one touchdown. With a run first philosophy instilled in Boston College for many years, the Eagles maintained that run-first approach while reaching 240 yards on the ground.

Going into the fourth quarter, the game was deadlocked at  17-17. With 4:37 left in the game, Boston College kicker Roberto Aguayo missed a 43-yard field goal giving Florida State the ball on their own 26 yard line. From then on Jameis Winston initiated one of his patented game-winning drives to take the Seminoles down the field quickly, ending in a 26 yard redemption field goal for Aguayo.

Boston College was able to take advantage of a porous Florida State defense that had trouble stopping the run. Between freshmen Jon Hilliman and Marcus Outlow, the running game got going quickly amassing 240 rushing yards. Quarterback Tyler Murphy added a crucial 21-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game in the third quarter.

The victory came at a time when the Florida State community was still coming to terms with the atrocities that occurred on campus earlier in the week. A gunman entered the library and opened fire, killing 3 students before taking his own life. With a heavy heart in every member of the crowd, the Seminoles fought to give their community a reason to smile. Sports can be looked to as part of the healing process in many scenarios and on Saturday night in Tallahassee, many people got a little boost to help move past the horrid library shooting .
