Buy a Chromebook, get 1TB of free Google Drive storage

The total value of the offer comes to $240, which is more than the price of many Chromebooks.

In a major push to move Chromebooks this holiday season, Google is offering 1TB of cloud storage on Google Drive for free for two years with the purchase of every Chromebook. With a 1TB Google Drive plan typically costing about $10 per month, the total value of the offer comes to $240, which is more than the price of many Chromebooks.

“That’s enough space to keep more than 100,000 awkward holiday sweater pics safe and shareable in Drive,” said Alex Vogenthaler, a Google Group Product Manager, in a blog post. “With that much free storage, you can use your Chromebook for work, play and pretty much everything else you’ll do this holiday season.”

Potential Chromebook buyers should keep in mind that once the two-years are up they will either have to start paying the $10 per month fee, be satisfied with the 15GB of free storage that Google provides everyone, or find another cloud storage option. Like Google, Microsoft OneDrive provides users with 15GB of free storage, and if they subscribe to Office 365, they receive 1TB of cloud storage free with the subscription. According to Forbes, iDrive also offers 1TB plans for as low as $5 a month.

The fact of the matter though, is that most computer users simply do not need 1TB of storage. Data compiled by Microsoft indicates that three out of four people have less than 15 GB of files stored on their PC. If users want to go higher than that, both Google and Microsoft offer 100GB storage plans for $2 a month.

Bottom line, while the Chromebook computer is a great option for some, the 1TB of free storage should not really factor in the purchase decision.
