Samsung and Nvidia are at war.
According to a recent report from Tech Times, Samsung has filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission, asking the government commission to ban Nvidia computer chips in the U.S. The complaint alleges that Nvidia has infringed upon the patents for several Samsung chips and processors, copying the designs for its own chips.
The complaint is a counter-strike to a complaint that Nvidia filed in September, alleging essentially the same thing. That complaint had accused Samsung and Qualcomm, a rival chip manufacturer, of infringing upon the patent for an Nvidia graphics-processing unit. Nvidia wanted the ITC to block all imports of Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets, which utilize the supposedly stolen technology.
As is usually the case with technology patent battles like this one, Samsung and Nvidia’s dispute is essentially a matter of “he said, she said” at this point. Each company has denied the allegations of the other, and both will likely continue to file complaints and lawsuits against one another for years to come. Like Samsung’s disputes against Apple, where the companies have alternately alleged patent infringing technology in the iPhone and Galaxy phones, the Samsung/Nvidia dispute will likely just go back and forth without anyone ever winning the war.
In other words, it is highly unlikely that the ITC will ever block either company from selling their chips or devices on the United States market. In a statement, Nvidia even called Samsung’s new counter-complaint with the ITC “a predictable tactic.” Just another day in the tech industry, so it seems.
