Florida sheriff's deputy shot and killed in ambush as officers respond to house fire.
An ambush Saturday morning in northwest Tallahassee has left a Florida sheriff’s deputy dead and another injured after they responded to reports of a house fire. The gunman was fatally shot by a Tallahassee police officer who lived nearby.
The man is thought to have set his own house on fire, then hid outside as officers approached. He shot the first deputy from behind, then shot him again after he fell. The man took the officer’s gun and shot another deputy, who was saved from serious injury by his bulletproof vest.
The name and address of the shooter was already in the law enforcement computer system due to previous threats, but the 911 dispatcher entered the address of the neighbor who reported the blaze, causing the alert to not be activated. After shooting the two deputies, the man walked away from his burning home, continuing to shoot at other officers and firefighters as they arrived on the scene.
Neighbors reported seeing the patrol cars and fire engines arrive, then heard popping noises that they thought were from the house burning. When seeing police officers running down the street with guns drawn they realized something more was going on. One neighbor had police run through her house to access her back yard, which was near the burning house. The officers told her to get herself and the three boys she was babysitting into the bathroom.
The incident occurred only 6 miles north of Florida State University, site of a shooting on Thursday in which three people were injured and the gunman killed. The shooter, Myron May, was an alumni of the school and a practicing attorney.
Saturday’s fire and shooting are still under investigation. The name of the slain deputy, the injured deputy and the gunman have not been officially released. It is still not known if anyone else was at the house, which continued to burn for several hours.
