Los Angeles could host big climate change summit featuring American, Chinese mayors

The mayor of Los Angeles made the proposal following a 12-day tour of Asian countries.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti will invite leaders of Chinese and American cities to a summit in his city next year in an attempt to tackle the problem of greenhouse gas emissions.

Garcetti, who is a member of President Obama’s climate change task force, recently finished a 12-day tour of Asian countries that included China, South Korea, and Japan, according to the Los Angeles Times. Garcetti said he has discussed the proposal with the White House as well as a number of mayors from Chinese and American cities, who have been receptive to the idea.

He said the Los Angeles is particularly well-suited to such a summit.

The announcement comes on the heels of President Obama committing the United States to slashing greenhouse gas emissions by a quarter by 2025. His Chinese counterpart, Xi Jingping, said his nation would also seek to cap carbon emissions and increase usage of nuclear, wind, and solar energy.

Much of that effort will come down to leadership within the cities themselves, hence the importance of such a summit in Garcetti’s eyes. Los Angeles has battled its own smog problem for years, and said it’s a “no-brainer” to do the summit within the city’s confines, as cities are “the source of the problem and must be the solutions,” he said in the Times report.

There is much work to be done before such a summit can take place, as there is not yet an agreed upon date for the event, and many other details will need to be worked out.

Garcetti’s trip to Asian countries focused in large part on the environment. In Shenzhen, he participated in the ribbon cutting of a new headquarters for a L.A.-based company that produces natural absorbents for oil and fuel spills. While in Beijing, his speech at the Stanford Center at Peking University focused on urbanization and sustainability.

Los Angeles hosted 570,000 Chinese visitors last year, the top destination in the United States. Garcetti wants to grow that number to one million annually.
