Taylor Swift’s 1989 continues to “shake off” old chart records

Swift is the first female musician to succeed herself on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Taylor Swift continues to show other musical artists how it should be done. Her latest album, 1989, released in October, continues to break records both as an entire album and when judged by its singles’ performances.

Billboard reports 1989 has just spent its 3rd consecutive week on the top of the Hot 200 chart. The only other 2014 album to spend as long on top was the Frozen soundtrack, which took first place for 13 weeks. 1989 and Frozen are also the only two albums in 2014 to sell more than a million copies, with 1989 becoming the first album to sell over 300,000 copies in its first 3 weeks since Beyonce’s last album in 2013. At 27 weeks split among 4 albums, Swift now moves to 3rd place among female artists for spending the longest time at the top of the charts, trailing only Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

Swift’s singles have set records as well. Billboard announced that the latest single off of 1989, Blank Space, has moved from #13 to #1 on the Hot 100 Chart. This has dethroned Swift’s previous single, Shake It Off, which was #1 for 4 weeks. The moves give Swift the distinction of being only the 10th artist in the Hot 100’s 56 years to have 2 singles consecutively top the charts. Even more notably, this is the first time a female artist has accomplished the feat.

1989 is the first album since Macklemore’s Heist to send its first 2 singles to #1. The last artist prior to Macklemore to achieve this ranking was Adele’s 21 back in 2011.

While Swift is expected to have some of her chart rankings dethroned by the One Direction album release next week, industry experts continue to consider her a ground-breaker for female artists in particular.
