The acclaimed singer tweets that her "will couldn't force (her) body" on stage.
Cher has canceled the remaining dates of her Dressed to Kill tour, confirms the Hollywood Reporter.
“I am totally devastated,” said Cher, in a statement. “Nothing like this has ever happened to me.”
Cher, 68, began her Dressed to Kill tour back in March before taking a scheduled hiatus in July. In that time she completed 49 concerts, each of which sold out.
She resumed the tour in September.
However, an infection that affects her kidney function — which she contracted before going back out on the road in September — has forced her to abruptly end her tour.
Recovery from said infection is described as “consistent” by her representative, yet her doctors have advised more rest.
“I cannot apologize enough to all the fans who bought tickets,” continues Cher. People who purchased a ticket to one of Cher’s 22 remaining tour dates can request a refund.
“I’m so proud of this show. It is my best ever. I sincerely hope that we can come back again next year and finish what we started,” concludes her statement.
Her tour was scheduled through Feb. 4 and had planned to zig-zag across the U.S., hitting several cities including Chicago, Washington, D.C., New York City and Boston.
She was scheduled to play Richmond, Va. on Friday and Auburn Hills, Mich. on Sunday.
Cher has also taken to Twitter to express her remorse over canceling her tour.
“I’m SORRY I Couldn’t B the 1 to tell you about postponing my tour,” tweeted Cher on Thursday. “I Tried SO HARD 2b Strong enough, but my Will couldn’t force my Body time.” The tweet was accompanied by a crying emoji.
Minutes later she tweeted, “let’s talk about it tomm. Between gut wrenching Sadness of not being Able 2go on stage, sing,b Silly,& wear new Mackie’s & Mike Dying, I’m (heartbroken emoji) (crying emoji).” The “Mike” in her tweet refers to Mike Nichols, the famous director who died Wednesday at 83.
The singer and actress first rose to prominence in the mid-1960s as one-half of the singing duo Sonny & Cher. Their “I Got You Babe” single, released in 1965, topped the charts. Cher launched her solo career the following year while continuing to perform with her then husband Sonny Bono.
By the mid-1970s the pair’s marriage had ended in divorce. Cher then broke out on her own, releasing musical albums, hosting her own (short-lived) variety show and acting in films.
Cher, whose representatives just announced the abrupt cancellation of her Dressed to Kill tour, is arguably best known for contralto voice, extreme fashion choices and ever-evolving personas.
